Creative Confidence After 40: Why It’s Never Too Late to Start Something New

Let’s be honest, starting something new after 40 can feel intimidating. You might wonder if it’s too late, if you have the time, or if you even remember how to be creative. But here’s the truth: creativity doesn’t have an age limit. In fact, this stage of life is often when many women finally have the courage to listen to their inner voice and explore their passions. And when they do? Incredible things happen.

This blog is for every woman who’s ever said, "I used to be creative," or "Maybe one day." It’s for you if you’ve been feeling the pull to try something new but need a little nudge (or a big push) to believe in yourself again. Let this be your permission slip.

My Story: Reinventing Myself Through Texture

After two decades in a high-stress career in law enforcement, I found myself battling PTSD and facing an identity I no longer recognised. I was burnt out, disconnected, and creatively empty. But then, during a time of recovery and therapy, I stumbled into textured art. What started as a quiet escape became the turning point of everything.

Plaster in hand, music playing, and no pressure to be perfect, it gave me peace. The more I created, the more I remembered who I was beyond the uniforms, to-do lists, and expectations. Eventually, that quiet hobby grew into a business, workshops, and a mission to help other women find that same spark.

If I can rebuild and reinvent through art after 40, so can you.

Why 40+ Is the Perfect Time to Get Creative

There’s something powerful about this phase of life. You know yourself better. You care less about what others think. You’re craving deeper meaning, connection, and joy. That makes it the perfect time to pick up a paintbrush, learn a new skill, or start that side hustle you’ve been daydreaming about.

Creativity isn’t just about making art, it’s about allowing yourself to be curious again. It’s about finding stillness, expression, and confidence in the process, not just the result. And it doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Sometimes, all you need is permission to begin.

Mindset Matters: Ditching the "I'm Not Creative" Belief

One of the biggest blocks I see in women over 40 is this deep-rooted belief that they’re not creative. Somewhere along the line, someone told us that art was only for "real artists," or that being a mum, a worker, or a wife meant putting passion on the backburner.

But creativity is a skill, not a talent. It gets stronger the more you use it. The trick is to stop waiting for perfection and start embracing play. Make the mess. Try the thing. Let go of the outcome and enjoy the process.

In my textured art workshops, we leave perfection at the door. We laugh, we sip, we make mistakes and magic. And every single time, someone says, "I didn’t know I could do this."

Yes, you can!

Small Steps, Big Shifts

You don’t have to change your life overnight. Maybe your first step is buying a canvas. Or signing up for a class. Or following a new passion account on Instagram. These small actions build momentum.

Here are a few simple ways to start:
Try a new medium, like textured wall art or mixed media
Set aside 20 minutes a week just for creating
Journal your ideas, even if you’re not sure where they’ll lead
Say yes to one thing that lights you up (even if it scares you)

Creativity is less about ability and more about bravery. The bravery to try. The bravery to be seen. The bravery to start again.

Your Creative Life Starts Now

If no one has told you lately: you are allowed to begin again. You are allowed to explore your creativity without guilt, fear, or apology. Your age is not a barrier, it’s your superpower. With life experience, perspective, and a heart that’s weathered storms, your art will have depth others can’t teach.

So whether you’re picking up textured art, starting a side business, or just letting yourself play for the first time in years, know that you’re right on time.
